Washington College

About Us

Washington College is a small, private liberal arts college located in the heart of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Founded in 1782, it is one of the oldest colleges in the United States. George Washington himself gave his name and fifty guineas to the college. Today, Washington College’s core values—Integrity, Determination, Curiosity, Civility, Leadership, and Moral Courage—challenge, inspire, and help create emerging citizen leaders.

Thanks to a generous private donation, the Washington College Archives have digitized some of our oldest audio-visual media. We have chosen to highlight speakers and events related to democracy and the role a liberal arts education plays in empowering engaged citizens. From Franklin D. Roosevelt to President George H. Bush, our collection features speakers from both sides of the aisle discussing topics that continue to influence political discourse today.
